Living with Gastroparesis

If you’ve ever felt unusually full after just a few bites of food, experienced frequent nausea, or dealt with ongoing bloating and stomach discomfort, you know how frustrating digestive issues can be. For some people, these symptoms may be caused by a condition called gastroparesis.

Gastroparesis, sometimes referred to as delayed stomach emptying, occurs when the muscles in the stomach don’t move food into the small intestine as quickly as they should. Instead of digesting normally, food remains in the stomach longer, which can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and make it difficult for your body to absorb the nutrients it needs.

Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, feeling full shortly after starting a meal, bloating, abdominal pain, heartburn, loss of appetite, and unexpected weight loss. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may come and go over time.

There are several possible causes of gastroparesis. Diabetes is one of the most common, as high blood sugar over time can damage the nerves that help control the stomach muscles. It can also develop after certain surgeries, viral illnesses, or as a side effect of some medications. In many cases, however, the exact cause isn’t known.

While there isn’t a cure for gastroparesis, there are ways to manage the condition and reduce symptoms. Many people find relief by eating smaller, more frequent meals instead of three large ones each day. Choosing foods that are lower in fat and fiber can also make digestion easier, since these foods tend to leave the stomach more quickly. Staying hydrated and taking time to chew food thoroughly may also help improve digestion.

If you have diabetes, keeping your blood sugar under control is especially important, as high glucose levels can make gastroparesis symptoms worse. Your healthcare provider may also recommend medications that help stimulate stomach movement or reduce nausea, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

Although occasional digestive discomfort is common, persistent symptoms shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re experiencing ongoing nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, difficulty eating, or unexplained weight loss, it’s important to seek medical evaluation. Your provider can help determine whether gastroparesis or another digestive condition may be the cause and recommend the appropriate treatment plan.

Living with gastroparesis can be challenging, but with the right care, dietary adjustments, and ongoing support, many people can successfully manage their symptoms and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. If you have concerns about your digestive health, the team at Marque Urgent Care is here to help evaluate your symptoms and guide you toward the care you need.
