As the weather warms up, many of us are spending more time outside staying active, whether it’s in youth sports, weekend workouts, or simply getting back into a routine. With that increase in activity also comes a higher risk of sprains, strains, and minor injuries.
Knowing how to respond in the moment can help reduce pain, prevent further injury, and support a faster recovery. What’s the difference between a sprain and a strain?
- Sprain: Stretching or tearing of ligaments, often affecting ankles, wrists, or knees
- Strain: Injury to muscles or tendons, commonly in the back, hamstrings, or shoulders
Both can cause pain, swelling, and limited movement, and can sometimes feel similar. For most mild injuries, early care can make a big difference.
Follow the ‘R.I.C.E’ method:
- Rest: Avoid activities that cause pain or discomfort
- Ice: Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every few hours to reduce swelling
- Compression: Use an elastic bandage to help control swelling
- Elevation: Keep the injured area raised above heart level when possible
It’s important not to rush back into activity too quickly, even if symptoms start to improve. Some injuries require medical evaluation. You should consider coming into urgent care if you notice:
- Significant swelling or bruising
- Inability to bear weight or use the affected area
- Severe or worsening pain
- Limited range of motion that doesn’t improve
- A popping sound at the time of injury
These could be signs of a more serious sprain, strain, or even a fracture. A few simple steps can help reduce your risk:
- Warm up before the activity and stretch afterward
- Ease back into exercise instead of jumping in too quickly
- Wear proper footwear and supportive gear
- Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed
If you’re unsure about the severity of an injury, it’s always better to have it evaluated. Our providers can assess your injury, perform X-rays if needed, and create a treatment plan to help you heal properly.
