September is National Baby Safety Month, a time to remind parents and caregivers of simple steps that can make a big difference in keeping little ones safe. From safe sleep practices to everyday household tips, here are key reminders to help protect your baby as they grow and explore.
Safe Sleep
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
- Place your baby on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet, or play yard that meets federal safety standards.
- Share the same room, but not the same bed, for at least the first six months.
- Keep cribs free of pillows, blankets, bumper pads, and stuffed animals.
- Breastfeeding and pacifier use can reduce the risk of sleep-related deaths.
- Avoid swings, car seats, and commercial sleep devices for routine sleep.
- Provide daily supervised tummy time for healthy development.
Furniture and Equipment
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
- Cribs: Make sure slats are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart and that mattresses fit snugly. Avoid drop-side cribs.
- Highchairs: Use once your baby can sit alone. Always buckle the harness and stay nearby.
- Car Seats: Babies under 2 should ride rear-facing unless they exceed 40 pounds or 40 inches. Harness straps should be snug and at or below the shoulders.
- Walkers: Not recommended, as they can cause falls and injuries.
- Safety Devices: Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check them regularly.
Everyday Safety
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:
- Choose toys without small or loose parts, magnets, or strings.
- Never leave your baby alone with pets.
- Avoid choking hazards such as grapes, hot dogs, popcorn, and hard vegetables until your child can chew well.
- Remove strings from clothing and check for loose buttons.
- Never leave your baby alone near water, even for a moment. Set water heaters to 120°F to prevent burns.
- Cover outlets, secure cords, and anchor heavy furniture. Use safety gates on stairs and window guards upstairs.
- Keep cleaning products, medicines, and purses with small items out of reach.
For emergencies, keep the Poison Control Center number handy: 1-800-222-1222.
National Baby Safety Month is a good time to pause and make sure your home is as safe as possible for your growing child. Small changes now can go a long way in protecting your baby’s health and safety every day.
