Simple First Aid for Cats and Dog Bites

Cat and dog bites are more common than many people realize. Even small punctures from a pet’s teeth can introduce bacteria into the skin and lead to infection if not properly cared for. Knowing some simple first aid steps can make a big difference in protecting your health.

What to Do Right Away

If you are bitten by a cat or dog, wash the wound immediately with mild soap and warm water. Let the water run over the bite for several minutes to help flush out bacteria. After cleaning, gently pat the area dry with a clean cloth. Apply an over the counter antibiotic ointment and cover the wound with a sterile bandage.

If the wound is still bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze until the bleeding stops. Elevating the injured area above the level of the heart can also help slow bleeding.

Ongoing Care

Change the bandage at least once a day or sooner if it becomes wet or dirty. Reapply antibiotic ointment each time. Keep an eye on the wound for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or increased pain.

When Not to Wait to See a Healthcare Provider

Some bites require medical attention right away. Do not wait if:

  • The bite is deep, bleeding heavily, or has torn the skin
  • The bite is on the face, hand, fingers, or near a joint
  • The person bitten has diabetes, a weakened immune system, or circulation problems
  • The bite was from a stray or unknown animal, or you are unsure of the animal’s vaccination status
  • The wound shows signs of infection such as spreading redness, swelling, warmth to touch, or fever

Healthcare providers may recommend antibiotics, a tetanus booster, or in some cases rabies treatment depending on the situation.

Prevention Tips

Teach children how to interact safely with pets. Avoid disturbing animals while they are eating or sleeping. Always supervise young children around dogs and cats, even familiar ones.

Bottom Line

Quick first aid can help reduce the risk of infection from cat and dog bites. However, some wounds need professional medical attention without delay. When in doubt, it is always safer to be checked by a healthcare provider. You can always come in to see Marque Urgent Care if you or a loved one experiences a cat or dog bite.
