Understanding the Flu and What You Need to Know This Season

Influenza, commonly referred to as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can lead to mild to severe illness and, at times, serious complications. Each year, flu season typically begins in the fall and peaks in the winter months, making it important to understand how it spreads, what symptoms to look out for, and how to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The flu spreads mainly through droplets when people infected with the virus cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby or be inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person may contract the flu by touching a surface or object with the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes.

Symptoms of the flu often appear suddenly and can include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, fatigue, and headache. Some people may also experience vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. While most people recover in a few days to less than two weeks, certain groups are at higher risk of complications such as pneumonia. These groups include young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease.

To reduce your chances of getting sick, good hygiene is essential. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, avoid close contact with anyone who is ill, and disinfect frequently touched surfaces. Maintaining a strong immune system with proper sleep, nutrition, hydration, and stress management also supports overall protection.

If you do come down with the flu, rest and hydration are the most important parts of recovery. Over-the-counter medications can help ease fever, aches, and congestion. A cool mist humidifier can make breathing easier, and warm fluids like tea or broth may provide comfort for a sore throat.

It is important to see a doctor if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, dizziness, severe dehydration, a high fever that does not improve with medication, or if symptoms worsen after initially improving. For young children and older adults, prompt medical attention is especially important if signs of severe illness appear.
